NRICH - online maths enrichment resources and maths discussion community
The NRICH website publishes free mathematical enrichment material aimed at Key Stage 1 through to Key Stage 5 - problems, puzzles, games, investigations and articles.
NRICH material focuses on problem-solving, building core mathematical reasoning and strategic thinking skills. It is designed to encourage creative, confident approaches to mathematical thinking. We also encourage users to send in problems for publication on the site, adding to the sense of an online mathematical community.
AskNRICH is a free online discussion and e-mentoring service, staffed by University of Cambridge student volunteers. It is a lively e-community which helps users of all ages to work out solutions to their mathematical questions.
Plus - popular understanding of mathematics web magazine and careers library
Plus is a free online magazine for ages 15+ and the general public. It features articles and news stories about the widest possible range of the applications of mathematics to the sciences, arts, commerce and society, bridging the gap between the media presentation of science and the mathematics encountered at school. News items uncover the hidden maths behind media headlines, while podcasts provide accessible insights into cutting-edge mathematical research.
Plus also has a large digital careers library encouraging the further study of maths at A-level or as a degree through showcasing the huge range of opportunities which studying maths can open up. The careers section features interviews with mathematicians in a range of different fields ranging from computer games design to defence analysis, medical statistics, financial modelling or architecture.
In July 2001 the site won the prestigious international Webby award for the best Science site on the Internet, joining winners in other categories including CNN, the BBC and National Geographic.
Maths and Sport: Countdown to the Games
To celebrate London 2012, we are developing free online resources exploring maths and science through the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games offer an extraordinary and exciting opportunity to explore mathematics and science at work in real-world contexts. Our online articles and activities are published at http://sport.maths.org; we will continue to publish new content throughout the run-up to the 2012 Games.
Our 'Maths and Sport: Countdown to the Games' project has been awarded the Inspire Mark, the badge of the London 2012 Inspire programme. The London 2012 Inspire Programme recognises exceptional and innovative projects that are directly inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Motivate
The Motivate programme has created links between university researchers and schools for over a decade, initially via live video-conferences. The video-conferencing programme ended in the 2010/2011 academic year, but the Motivate website continues to provide free online multi-media resource packs for schools, including video clips featuring university lecturers, in which curriculum learning is enriched by a real-life and/or cross-curricular context. Several multi-media resource packs for KS3 and 4 explore mathematics in the context of healthcare, medicine and the biomedical sciences; and we have produced a multi-media resource pack on Babylonian Maths aimed at the KS2/3 transition, with a particular focus on making maths relevant and interesting to girls.
